Environment

THE GLOBAL CHALLENGE

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the scale of environmental challenges and the complexities behind them. However, we can also feel inspired to finding new, more enlightened way of doing things. Why is it important to change the way we do things? Do those changes need to apply to what we wear?

A few facts:

  •  Agriculture: More than half of the world’s farmable land suffers major degradation and is threatened to become unproductive (UNEP). “Cotton is the world’s most important non food agricultural commodity, it grows on 2, 4% of global arable land”. (PAN).
  •  Chemicals: Little is known about the long-term effects of the toxic elements reversed in the soil in the form of pesticides and herbicides. Many have been proven to have negative effects on human health and biodiversity. According to the Environmental Justice Foundation, more pesticides are used on cotton than on any other crop in the world.
  •  Climate: 70% of climate change is caused by carbon emissions (Stern Review). Fashion supply chains are extremely globalised and therefore contribute to high levels of co2 emissions.

Is the term “sustainable fashion” paradoxical (i.e.: is it possible to make appearances substantial?).

We believe that fashion is a perfect way to raise awareness and trigger wider change. Clothes are deeply emotional and contribute to framing our identities. Therefore, they can have a wider impact and create a culture of sustainability by beginning to ask the right questions about contemporary lifestyles.

OUR PLAN

Because we believe that it is possible to improve the way we produce and use things (and in particular beautiful pieces of clothing), we are very inspired by everything sustainable.

We know that there is no right or wrong answer to sustainability but many opportunities to develop unique identities and new creative models. So, we do not pretend that it is perfect but we do have a plan:

  1. Materials: Only use fabrics with a minimum impact on the environment
  2. Limit our carbon footprint
  3. Ensure our suppliers have the right certifications

1. Materials

Encourage innovation towards sustainability.

2. Carbon footprint: reduction

Our carbon strategy is really to limit the emissions of our supply chain.

- All our suppliers are based in European countries: France, Portugal, Spain and UK (some have productions sites outside of Europe but most manufacture in Europe).

- To ensure the greatest possible transparency, we source all our trimmings ourselves, no intermediary!

- Our manufacturer is based in France (only about 200 miles away from our London shop).

3. Certifications

We understand that you need the assurance that we are really meeting recognised environmental standards. So, we ask from our suppliers two main certifications:

- Our fabric providers are certified by GOTS, the industry benchmark for organic cotton certification. This means that rigorous standards (based on EU Legislation & which include no use of pesticide and harmful chemicals) are verified from the planting of cotton to the knitting stage where yarn is transformed into fabric.

- It is very important for us that our lingerie respects and protects your skin. We want you to be comfortable at all time. All our fabrics, trimmings and dyes are certified OEKO-TEX 100. This means that they are free from harmful chemicals, prohibited substances and include precautionary measures to safeguard health.
